O-rings
The O-ring is the most widely used type of seal because it requires little installation space and is very easy to fit. It is defined as a closed ring with a circular cross-section, made mainly from an elastic rubber material, known as an elastomer. The size of an O-ring is defined by its inner diameter (Ød1) and cross-section (Ød2).
O-rings are most often made from various types of rubber by vulcanization (cross-linking) of the blank in compression moulds or injection moulds with a seamless surface. With a correctly designed groove and a suitably chosen material, they perform reliably over the long term in both static and dynamic applications within the temperature range permitted for the rubber material concerned.
